Fire at Thunder Bay encampment sends 2 to hospital

Two people were taken to the hospital following a tent fire at an encampment in Thunder Bay.

Fire crews were called to the Kam River Park encampment area off Simpson Street at around 4 a.m. Wednesday.

“Upon arrival, the first fire crew encountered flames engulfing a tent,” Platoon Chief Jo Rucchin said in a news release.

Firefighters quickly put out the flames using a hand line and damage was limited to the one tent.

Rucchin said two people were transported to the hospital for “medical evaluation” following the fire.

Members of the Thunder Bay Police Service are investigating the incident.
