Student In Critical Condition After Fire

One person is in critical but stable condition after a fire early Saturday morning.

Firefighters say an international student was trapped inside a rooming house by the blaze, which broke out in a Hartland Street residence.

They say there were between six and ten students living there, who also reported barely making it out through the smoke and flames.

Fire officials add the home wasn’t properly approved as a rooming house, and stress landlords are responsible for making sure tenants have working smoke alarms.

Firefighters, city police, and the Office of the Fire Marshall are investigating the cause and whether the north-side building was in line with the fire code.
