State of the North Summit Pushes For More Control

Regional leaders say the north has to be in the driver’s seat.

Members of the Empire Club in Toronto are coming away with a good dose of northern knowledge, following the first ever State of the North Summit.

It was a panel discussion with northern representatives, including Kenora’s mayor Dave Canfield, who definitely left his mark. Canfield says too many people, from environmentalists in California to bureaucrats in Toronto, are trying to say what’s best for us. He notes that unless it’s recognized that the north is a part of the economic solution for the province, Toronto will always be part of the problem.

Canfield adds the message needs to get across that a strong economy in the north helps drive the engine in southern Ontario. (File photo)
