Women’s Shelter, Counselors Offer Help Amid COVID-19

A local women’s shelter says their doors are still open during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Faye Peterson House Executive Director Debbie Zweep says while they are getting fewer requests for help, they are also still offering counselling.

“They can certainly call, although of course that might not be available to everyone. Right from their phone, they can tap on our chatroom and get in and chat with one of our crisis workers right away. Many women that are working with us have access to texting,” Zweep points out.

The shelter official says anyone who needs to use their shelter will be screened for COVID-19. Their location is confidential, and is only given out to women who need to stay with them.

Thunder Bay Counselling service also says to reach out if you don’t feel safe at home, and need someone to talk to.

Clinical Counselor Diana Prairie says there may be more need for their services right now. She says with many people staying home from work, school, or social activities, abusive or controlling relationships may become worse.

Prairie says people who are already connected with one of their counselors can also call to check-in during these times. She adds they offer “talk-in” counselling by phone or video call Monday to Friday as well.
