The in-coming roundabout for the intersection of Edward Street and Redwood Avenue will have a design and landscape.
Thunder Bay city council approved it unanimously Monday night, meaning the medicine wheel design will be going in, which staff indicates could be constructed using 2021 capital budget funds.
The choice for the project, according to Northwood Councillor Shelby Ch’ng, was made after consulting with the Anishinaabe Elders Council and is an Indigenous symbol composed of a circle divided into four quadrants of black, white, yellow and red.
Under this concept, the truck apron of the central island would be paved with asphalt and painted using thermoplastic in the traditional colours of the medicine wheel.
Ongoing maintenance of the installation be included in the 2022 budget and all budget years going forward.
Operating/Maintenance Fees
- Thermoplastics would cost $30,000 every 7-10 years
- Planting beds will require additional maintenance resulting in an annual operating increase to the Parks & Open Spaces budget of $5,300 for the Medicine Wheel or $3,700 for more basic plantings
