It was a rare discovery in a remote northwestern Ontario community. Members of the Neskantaga First Nation rescued a rare bird from South America this week in their community.
It was recently identified by a Lakehead University expert as being an American Purple
Gallinule. It is rarely seen in Canada and was a first for Neskantaga First Nation.
They say the bird had similar features to a crane. Councillor Gary Quisses indicates “this one, was a bird we have never seen before and knew we needed
to ensure it was protected.” The community kept it safe indoors after capturing it. It was flown to Thunder Bay to be cared for by the ThunderBird Wildlife Rescue.
