Public School Trustees Closing Churchill, Sparing Superior

The public school board is approving its South side school renewal plan, but North side students won’t see any changes.

All but one trustee voted to keep Superior Collegiate a high school, and unanimously voted to move Churchill students into Westgate Collegiate.

Cheryl Silen was one of the parents who came out to see Tuesday night’s decision. She says while there’s no way to tell whether the Board will revisit the question of closing Superior in the future, she’s relieved the school is staying as-is.

With the motion to close Superior as a high school defeated, Chair of the Board Deborah Massaro feels there’s no cause for concern for the Superior community for now.

On the South side, the Board now has to apply for Ministry of Education funding to build a new elementary school on the Churchill site. The plan is to move students from Agnew H. Johnston and Edgewater Park Public Schools into that new school for the 2018-19 school year.

Massaro says she believes it will receive the money, as the South side hasn’t seen any new schools built for quite some time.

That was a concern voiced by several trustees. While they’d support the South side renewal plan, trustees wanted to see the Board come up with a contingiency plan in case Ministry funding fell through. However, the Board will wait to hear back from the Ministry before looking at alternatives, Massaro says.
