There’s a new Superintendent of Education at the Lakehead Public School Board, just as they had to come up with a plan to deal with COVID-19.
AJ Keene started the job last week when the province announced schools would be closed for three weeks.
“There was a straight-up announcement by the Ministry, and then, ‘Just make it happen.’ So we got quite a bit done, got a lot of communication out, it feels good to be a part of that team,” he says.
Indigenous education, special education, and human rights are top priorities for him as he gets settled into his new job.
“I think those have to be on the forefront of everything we do. When we talk about classroom learning, we have to look through those lenses. When we talk about school safety, we have to look through those lenses,” Keene explains.
Keene has been an administrator with Lakehead Public Schools for 15 years and is currently the Early Years and Program Principal. He is a graduate of University of Windsor in 1993 and Lakehead University Faculty of Education in 1994.
