Provincial Cuts To Municipalities Postponed

The treasurer for the City of Thunder Bay calls it welcome news.

Linda Evans indicates the Ford government’s cuts to public health, child care and ambulances have been put on hold, meaning any cuts to the city budget can now wait until next year.

The province was going to cut a total of $7,7 million for municipalities to spend on ambulance and emergency services retroactive to the first of this year.

Evans says preliminary estimates indicated the city would have experienced a shortfall of near $500,000 just in paramedic services alone.

City councillor Mark Bentz calls it a good news story for municipalities which would otherwise need to scramble to accommodate the mid-year cuts.
