Program Teaching Catholic Students About Indigenous Culture

Thunder Bay’s Catholic School Board students are learning about Indigenous culture.

It’s part of the Walking the Path program and Indigenous Outreach Coordinator Kevin Kakegamic tells us it was a real learning experience for everyone involved.

280 kids in eight different schools took part in the program over the last three months.

Teacher Lyndsay Hupka tells us the kids are really engaged.

“They’re happy to be learning about a new culture, learning about their Canadian history,” Hupka explains, “Our Anishinaabe students are very proud of what we’re doing, and you can just see the excitement in their faces to be sharing their culture with their peers.”

Grade 6 St. Jude student Lily Moses says she learned about the Residential School System, along with traditional teachings and songs.

Students capped off their learning recently with a feast. (File Photo)
