Police Service Recognized For Attempts To Deal With Racism

A provincial police watchdog is out with its report card on the recommendations it made after calling out the Thunder Bay Police Service for systemic racism.

In December of 2018, the Ontario Independent Police Review Director released its report called Broken Trust that made 44 recommendations to deal with the racism problem.

Former interim director of the OIPRD Sylvana Capogreco tells us she is encouraged by the amount of work done in one year.

“All I can say is that I am encouraged by the commitment that they’ve shown starting with the acknowledgment in January of last year that racism does exist, I think that was a good first step,” said Capogreco.

The former interim review director notes the police force has made attempts to implement a number of the recommendations, pointing the reinvestigation of the nine sudden Indigenous deaths which were “problematic.” She calls it a “robust process.”

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
