If you need to park in a construction zone, you will not have to pay a parking fee.
Thunder Bay City Council decided to wave these fees in Monday’s meeting.
The idea was brought to the table last month, stating construction zones effect nearby businesses by making it less appealing to park there.
The first area to receive this temporary designation will be specific streets in the area of the North Core:
- Court Street – from Lincoln Street to Van Norman Street
- Cumberland Street – from Lincoln Steet to Van Norman Street
- Red River Road – Algoma Street to Water Street (does not include surface lots or Parkade)
- Park Avenue – Court Street South to Cumberland Street South
- Cook Street- Court Street North to St. Paul Street
- St. Paul Street – Red River Road to Van Norman Street
- Lorne Street
City Manager John Collin, says while parking rates have been a large topic of discussion this year, it is now put to rest.
“With Bylaw 298-2024 being approved this evening, we have completed this round of various parking initiatives, with a view to ultimately achieving parking as a sustainable initiative within the city,” said Collin.
Where meters are designated for two-hour free parking, they will have clearly marked meter head covers.
Collins adds there will be ongoing reviews and reports back to council on the issue.
