Options Considered For Former Pool Site

The former Dease pool site could soon become a skateboard park, similar to Marina Park.

Area resident KC Craig, who’s house is right beside the park, tells us she is looking forward to this possibility, which may include permanently closing Dease Street between Vickers and McKellar for added safety.

“Having children on either side of a busy intersection, I’d rather see it all one. So, as a family, you have children at the playground, but maybe older kids that want to go to the skatepark, there’s no worry or concern other than having to cross traffic,” says Craig.

Other ideas for the site include tennis and/or pickleball, or fruit trees and family area.

She feels the skateboard park is the best idea. “It used to be a pool, it was noisy, there was kids, there was laughter. So why not see a skatepark come back? It’s something where kids are being physically active. They’re outside in the fresh air. I don’t see how anyone could be against that.”

The mother of two, who has lived in Thunder Bay all her life, points to what she calls a very well run Marina skateboard park, when considering people living around the Dease Street site.

“There’s quite a few families along both sides, actually all three sides that are looking forward to this. We’ve been asking for a new park, and it’s finally being promised,” she says.

City council will hear about the options during Monday night’s meeting.
