June 26,1939 – October 10, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother Suzanne Jean Spengler (Nee Taylor) at the age of 86. Sue left us peacefully in her sleep at Pinewood Court Care Home. Sue was born in New Liskeard (Dymond Township), Ontario to parents Irene and John Lowery Taylor. She was the second of four children and being the only girl helped to shape her strong and independent personality. She married young, and after time spent in Geraldton, Nakina and Sioux Lookout, settled in Thunder Bay and raised her four children. She worked tirelessly, often while attending night school to upgrade her skills. Her jobs as a dental assistant, then an RPN at Grandview Lodge, the Spence Clinic, and McKellar Hospital helped to round out her skills and her social life. All of the people that she met and enjoyed along the way were instrumental in her final career as a successful realtor. None more than her second husband and partner in all, Gunter Spengler. Moms love of music was inherited from her father and her lifelong love of dance began at an early age. Her skilled painting and knitting, she learned from her mother. The amazing sweaters that she knit for all of her 11 grandchildren are now being treasured by a generation of five great grandchildren, and her folk art painting projects are to be found throughout the homes of all of us! Mom was always involved in the community through her volunteer work, dance classes, and cross country skiing. She loved a swim in any lake and she and Gunter looked forward to all of their travels through his home country of Germany and the rest of Europe. Her end of life trials with dementia did not define who she was. Sue was a vibrant, fun loving woman who lit up a room and was always first on a dance floor. Her humour and kindness are remembered first and foremost. Her dinner table for many year, was open to anyone needing company. Her favourite day of the week in her later years was always Friday, when she lunched with her “clogging gals”. Sue leaves behind her four children, Jennifer (Michael Terrell), Colleen (John Dolce), Mike (Sue) and John, as well as step sons Fred (Wendy) and Steve (Lisa). She took great pride in her 11 grandchildren and would be equally proud of five great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers Bruce Taylor (Linda) and John Taylor. She is predeceased by her parents Irene and John Lowrey Taylor, her brother Tom Taylor and her very special husband of 30 years, Gunter Spengler. The family would like to thank the staff at Pinewood Court for their caring service in her final years. Special thanks also to Darri for everything she did for Sue. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in her name to the ALZHEIMER SOCIETY THUNDER BAY. A cremation has taken place and a private family and friends celebrations will be held at a later date.
