Paul Maybroda

Mr Paul Louis Maybroda, age 60 years, resident of Thunder Bay, passed away unexpectedly October 16, 2025 while on his annual moose hunting expedition with his Sturgeon Lake hunt group. He was surrounded by his very close lifelong friends and family.

Born December 19th, 1964, his childhood began in Current River, moving to Murillo at age 9 where he worked alongside his father, Grandpa Louie and Grampy building the family home. Growing up in Murillo, Paul explored the bush. He spent time skidooing, snowshoeing, hunting, and building a sturdy treehouse in the back 40 that had a very leaky roof! He caught his first of many fish at the “Whiskey Jack” and went to “Twin” with his Grampy for the first time. He said as an adult “Twin is my church.”

Paul graduated from Selkirk High School and found his calling when he joined the Lake Superior Scottish Regiment (infantry) at age 17. He became a member of the Canadian Armed Forces in 1982. He held many positions within the Regiment, from that of rifleman, machine gunner, Section 2 l/C, Section Commander, Platoon 2 l/C and CQMS/Regimental Stores. He also held various positions within the Thunder Bay Garrison itself. Paul spent many years with the local training detachment and held positions in both the Junior Ranks and Sgts and WO’s Mess. Along with this, many a summer were spent as either a candidate or instructor at various locations across Canada. Paul was deployed to Germany in 1984 with the RCR along with other members of the Regiment during the Cold War period. In 1992 he was deployed to the former Yugoslavia under UNPROFOR Op Harmony as a Section Commander attach posted to 3 PPCLI. Paul was awarded the following medals during his military career: CD, UNPROFOR, CANADA 125.

Anyone who knew Paul knew how much of his heart went into the Regiment. Even in retirement he had a huge involvement in the Regimental Association along with other retired Lake Sup’s. Paul was always about the pointy end of the stick… that’s to say the infantry… he always had a sly, sarcastic comment of anyone from another unit that wasn’t infantry, even if they were from another infantry unit. They still weren’t a Lake Sup. However, over some drinks around the stand-up table, he always gave a person their due regardless of their questionable unit choice. If they were a good shit doing a good job, that is all that mattered to him. Sergeant Paul Maybroda retired in 1998 having fulfilled, in his mind, his duty to the Regiment and his Country in his active role as an lnfanteer. Lake Sup’s!

In 1998, he married Donna Wylie. Paul and Donna shared Scamp for many years. Scamp was Paul’s loyal and beloved companion on many adventures, some riskier than others!

Paul became manager of the Port Arthur Prosvita in 2000. He brought much life to the PA Prozz, sometimes to the consternation of the old Ukrainian “BlueHairs” as he liked to call them. He created “Steak Night” there and organized many outdoor concerts which were wildly popular.

His years at the Prozz helped prepare him for the big endeavour when he and his partner Bobbi Nugent opened Shooters Tavern in 2009. Bobbi wanted to open a bar and Paul said “Not without me you’re not!” They decided on “Shooters” for a name because it covered all his interests. As they fought through their many different ideas they eventually came to the same conclusion. “Bobbi is always right!” They started with a core staff, some of whom are with Shooters to this day. Paul considered them family and went out of his way to ensure they felt that.

Paul took many people under his wing. Although he had no biological children, he was a father figure to many. He was a loyal and solid partner, son, brother, uncle, cousin, friend and employer. The impact Paul had on people was huge and irreplaceable. We are grateful to have had him in our lives, although for too short a time.

Paul is survived by his partner Bobbi Nugent and her daughter Jenna, Donna Maybroda, brother Randy (Anna), sister Dawn, nephews and nieces Jacob, Madeline, Micaela and Sam, many close cousins, Aunts MaryAnn Maybroda and Susan Barnes. He is predeceased by his parents Walter Maybroda and Judy (Barnes), and brother-in-law Michael Krawczuk.

He will be deeply missed by all.

Celebration of Life will be held at 3pm Saturday, November 15th, 2025 at the O’Kelly VC Armoury at 317 Park Ave, Thunder Bay. As per Paul’s wishes, a good old Irish Wake will follow at Shooter’s Tavern commencing at 7pm.
