It is with great sadness that we announce Martin Hoey, aged 82, passed away on February 19th, 2026, at St. Joe’s Hospital with his wife and daughter by his side.

He will be greatly missed and will remain deeply loved by his wife, Bernadine Hoey, his children: Martin Hoey Jr. (Rosemary), Tina Despres (Michael), Sherree Hoey (Gerald Svane), Tracey Maki (Leonard), his grandchildren: Alyshia, Kelly, Justin, Corey, Audrey, Madison, Makinin, and his great-granddaughter, Ellisyn.

Marty and his wife, Bern, were married for 60 years and were rarely without each other.

Both he and Bern shared a love for the outdoors, and during their younger years, every Friday they would pick a lake and camp and fish for the weekend. He always spoke fondly of these trips and memories. Marty continued camping and enjoyed camping trips with his children and grandchildren throughout the years.

As Marty and Bern slowed down their camping trips, he picked up a new outdoor hobby: gardening. Marty used what he learned from living on a farm in Nolalu for many years and applied it to gardening. When they lived in Ignace, the garden took up their entire lot. Their garden at their home on Broadmore Avenue also took up most of their backyard.

Once Marty and Bern moved back to Thunder Bay and into their apartment, his love for gardening did not slow down. He set up a garden on their apartment balcony and kept seedlings inside. He also helped his daughters, Tracey and Tina, with their own gardens.

He was incredibly intelligent, especially in math. He was also detail-oriented, precise, and technically skilled, as demonstrated by his lifelong hobby of building models. He particularly enjoyed building train and ship models.

Marty’s family would like to thank the nurses and personal support workers who helped keep him home for as long as possible.

As per the family’s wishes, there will be no service.
