We celebrate the life of James (Jim) Michael Costello, beloved brother, son, nephew and friend. It’s difficult to find the words to define who Jim was or how he lived his life because he was all things. He was fearless and charismatic, thoughtful and passive, impetuous and patient, a city boy built for the wilderness. He attended elementary schools in both Scarborough and Muskoka and high schools in Gravenhurst, Barrie and Orillia. He loved growing up at Gibson Lake and cherished the friendships he made there for the rest of his life. James loved photography, canoeing, swimming, water skiing, skating, music and carpentry. He was good at whatever he set his hand to and made an impression on everyone he met.
He was as proud of his Irish heritage as he was to be a Canadian. Thank you to the Mohawks of Wahta, the Chippewas of Rama, the Ojibway of Fort William for sharing the traditions and the lands on which James lived his life.
James is survived by his sister, Caroline and numerous relatives in Canada and Ireland. Predeceased by his parents, Barbara and James Costello, sister, Colleen and his dear Uncle ‘Jim’ Murphy. James will be remembered fondly by his neighbours in the East End and numerous friends he made throughout his life.
The Costello family owes an immense debt of gratitude to the hardworking and caring medical teams that have assisted James throughout his life. Your attentiveness, kindness, and dedication gave Jim many years that he would not have otherwise known. Your tenderness in his final days will never be forgotten. Thank you.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, when family and friends will gather for Funeral Mass in St. Patrick’s Cathedral at 11:00 am, celebrated by Msgr. P.M. Stilla.
