It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Cheryl Eileen Saj (Leggett) on May 3rd, 2026. Born on October 9th, 1950 in Somerville, Massachusetts, USA to Harold and Margaret Leggett, she attended Somerville High School and graduated in 1968.
While on a Caribbean cruise vacation aboard the Queen Elizabeth II, Cheryl met Andre Saj. He would become the love of her life and they wed in 1978. She relocated to Thunder Bay, Ontario where she and Andre raised their three sons. She proudly became a Canadian citizen in 2008.
Cheryl spent her early career working for telephone companies in Boston and Thunder Bay and her later years working for Statistics Canada, overseeing surveys throughout the north and running the Canadian Census for Northwestern Ontario.
Cheryl loved being a mother and nana, providing support and encouragement for her sons and grandkids, watching their many school and extracurricular activities, especially baseball. Being from the greater Boston area, she was a passionate Boston Red Sox fan. Seeing the curse broken in 2004 brought her much joy. Cheryl also enjoyed playing cards, having lots of fun whether it was with family, neighbours, or fellow residents at Glacier Ridge. Cheryl loved a good card game.
Cheryl is survived by sons Che, Matthew (Alyssa), and Blair (Katie); grandchildren Gavin, Quinn, Ryder, Alex, and Liam; brothers-in-law Marvin, Julian, Boris, and John; sisters-in-law Janet Leggett, Lucy (Peter) Cabel, and Leona; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband, Andre; parents, Harold and Margaret; sister Claudia (Richard); brother Colin (Nancy); brothers-in-law Raymond (Judy), Edward, Dan, and Walter.
A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 13, 2026 at Hope Christian Reformed Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Children’s Health Foundation or Canadians Cancer Society.
