Barry Atkinson

November 21, 2025

Barry’s family is heartbroken to announce his passing at home, surrounded by his loved ones after a 1 1/2 year struggle with Cancer and lung disease.

Barry was born in Bolton, Lancashire, England to parents John and Edith Atkinson. He and his brother Jack thrived in a loving household surrounded by extended family. Barry emigrated to Canada when he was 16 and entered the work force in Toronto as a draftsman, eventually accepting employment as a transit driver with TTC and finishing with Thunder Bay Transit where he was affectionately known as the Governor.

Barry and his wife Christina moved to Thunder Bay in 1980 after a canoe trip to Quetico showed them the beauty of Northwestern Ontario. Here they raised their beloved children Willie, Gillian and Graham.

Barry had a knack for drawing birds, as well as wood carving – pieces which grace the homes of his children and give them reminders of his love. Dogs, motorbikes and birds were a constant throughout Barry’s life.

Summers spent at the family camp on Starnes Lake with winters in Florida.

Barry was predeceased by his parents and in-laws. He is survived by his wife Christina of 43 years, children Willie (Niki, Sheridan), Gillian (Blair) and Graham (Beth, Max and Ellie – who meant the world to their grandpa), brother Jack (Terry), Nieces Michelle Sandham (Mike, Aubrey, Ryan), Denise Needham (Ty, Taylor, Cole) sisters-in-law, Ailsa Oxley, (Peter, Kieran, Meagan) Barbara Riddell (Bruce, Samantha) as well as spoiled and loved dog Emma.

Barry had incredible and longstanding friendships, all who were very special to him. Heartfelt thanks to friends and neighbours who showed support to Barry and our family during his illness. Thanks to the physicians involved, Community Health at Home, RN Pierre and especially Dr Steve Klassen (Marley), who exemplified the true spirit of a family Doctor.

As per Barry’s wishes, cremation has taken place with a private family celebration of life to follow. Barry would want you to smile when you think of him.
