Aboriginal leadership is working with the federal government on new legislation governing child welfare.
Kenora MP Bob Nault says the goal of the bill would be to address the over-representation of Indigenous children in foster care.
“The idea is very much to make sure kids are not being taken out of their communities for things like housing, and/or their bedrooms are not big enough, or the kinds of legislative processes that have been in place for some time now.”
Recent statistics show that over 52 percent of children in foster homes are Aboriginal.
The new legislation, which is being co-developed with First Nation, Inuit, and Métis groups, is expected to be introduced sometime in 2019.
