New Official Plan Approved

The city’s blueprint for land development is now officially in place.

Councillors unanimously accepted their first new Official Plan in more than 15 years, after hours of discussion and deputations from a number of different groups and residents.

One of the changes made to the plan last night was designating the wooded portion of the Lakehead Psychiatric Hospital lands for community use.

That goes against a recommendation from city Administration, who point out that that will limit the amount of development that can be done on the land.

Current River Councillor Andrew Foulds asked for that change, explaining that it will hurt the environment at Boulevard Lake if the entire LPH property is turned into housing.

The province still needs to put its approval on the plan to make it offiical, which city Administration believe will happen before the end of 2018. (File Photo)
