Neskantaga Residents Airlifted To Thunder Bay

About 200 residents of Neskantaga First Nation are calling Thunder Bay home but there’s no indication for how long.

Chief Chris Moonias tells us they were evacuated here because of a problem with the quality of the community’s water supply.

“We weren’t going to evacuate, but things turned worse,” explains Moonias.

Recently an unknown sheen was discovered in the community’s water reservoir system.

Moonias says “Everybody is now vulnerable because of the fact there is no running water at all. They can’t flush toilets, they can’t wash dishes, they can’t take showers.”

Test results on the water are expected soon.

Neskantaga First Nation is also known as Landsdowne House and is located about 400 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
