You may not see transport trucks spending the night at the County Fair Plaza as City Council agrees to consider a weight restriction for East Avenue.
Councillors voted Monday night to ask city administration to look at how they could put a weight limit on the road transport trucks use to enter the plaza off Dawson Road.
Truck traffic at County Fair has raised concerns previously, leading to complaints about garbage and bottles of urine found in the parking lot.
At-Large Councillor Trevor Giertuga says that’s the result of truck drivers spending the night at the plaza instead of a rest stop.
“The County Fair Plaza isn’t a truck stop,” he says. “It shouldn’t be a place where people throw out urine bottles, it shouldn’t be that kind of place.”
The city’s Manager of Licensing and Enforcement Doug Vincent says it would come with major penalties for drivers who ignore the rule.
“There would be a fine [through] the Highway Traffic Act. That’s a very serious offence, because it carries a Commercial Vehicles Operator’s License demerit point for the driver and the company, and if they get too many, the companies can actually lose their license to operate,” he explains.
Council expects to receive a report on how the city could create and enforce the restriction in early December.
