More Charges Possible In Hammarskjold Case

City police say they expect to lay at least one more charge in connection with threats to Hammarskjold High School .

During a conference Thursday, Inspector Ryan Hughes said it will be against one of the two Hammarskjold students arrested this week, but explains neither will face terrorism charges.

“We’ve consulted some of the other policing agencies, and the type of incidents that happened don’t meet the threshold for terrorism,” Hughes notes.

Police say there were more than 30 threats made against the school since September.

Charges against 18-year-old Jade-Emilie Pakrashi of Shuniah and a 14-year-old boy have not been proven in court.

Both have been released on bail after hearing charges of public mischief and mischief interfering with lawful use of property.

When police were asked about preventing future abuse of the Crime Stoppers service Police Chief Sylvie Hauth says they want the community to know individuals “cannot hide behind the fact they are anonymous when submitting a tip.”

However, police note the incidents haven’t changed how Crime Stoppers functions.

“When a threat comes in, it’s still going to take officers a bit of time to do the appropriate paperwork to get the information that we require,” Hughes explains. “Crime Stoppers is not just handing us the information.”

City police add they’re better prepared to deal with any future incidents of Crime Stoppers being used to call in false threats.

Hughes explains they will be looking at how to make sure the service can’t be abused in a similar way.

“That’s something, as a police service, we have to speak about regarding all the issues we encountered over the last several months with Crime Stoppers. That’s a discussion we’ll have internally and then go forward to Crime Stoppers.”
