The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks has confirmed the algae at Shelter Bay on Lower Shebandowan Lake.
The water sample was collected on August 9, 2021.
It is important to avoid drinking or swimming in the water, and to keep pets away as well.
Blue-green algae are microscopic organisms that are naturally present in lakes and streams, and are not dangerous in low numbers.
It is when their population rapidly increases and forms a ‘bloom’ which produces toxins.
The public is being reminded to avoid any water where blue-green algae has bloomed, and for around two weeks after it dissipates.
