Mayor Calls Non-Essential Shut Down ‘Difficult’

The mayor calls the decision to send home over 400 non-essential city workers due to COVID-19 a difficult one.

Bill Mauro notes while it appears most of the cutting at city hall could be over, he is not ruling out more.

“So hopefully we will be getting towards the end of this in terms of service reduction decisions but that can change, as I said that’s very fluid and it continues to evolve.”

The mayor says the overriding principle has to be the health and safety of city employees and the public.

For the employees affected, the mayor understands they are not being told a lot at this time, but senior city staff is “working very hard” to get that information to them understanding “there is some anxiety here.”
