Council Asked For Martial Arts Support

The city is being asked to voice its support for two major martial arts events.

Ken Boshcoff is one of the organizers of the 2020 National Wushu Championship, and explains the city has been named as the host.

“Our city can expect 300 national-level competitors, plus 50 or so officials, plus national media, plus families and keen fans.”

Organizers say they have secured the Lakehead University Fieldhouse to host the championship in late July of next year.

They also want formal support of a bid to host an international Tai Chi event in 2022.

Boshcoff notes they expect both events to be good for our economy.

“Direct spending is estimated at about $200,000, with the $450,000-$500,000 economic impact. At the 2022 [International Taijiquan Championship], it should be about three times that, with $600,000 direct spending and a minimum of $1 million in economic impact,” he explained to City Council Monday night.

Organizers add there are fewer details worked out for the 2022 event, but note successfully hosting the 2020 championship will further demonstrate the city’s ability to host international events.
