The COVID-19 pandemic has left many Lakehead University students struggling to pay for groceries and that’s why their student union has stepped up to offer care packages
Student Outreach Officer Phi Yen says at first they were giving out food staples in their package but several weeks ago received a donation that helped them kick it up a notch.
“Pasta, cereal, rice and canned meat like tuna and ham but the generous donation from Aramark and Conference Services provided us with milk, bread and bagels,” Yen said.
So far LUSU has handed out over 130 care packages.
Yen says she has received many emails thanking LUSU for their care packages stressing they can’t afford groceries at the moment.
“Because most of them lost their job, and some of them couldn’t fly home, we have students who just graduated but can’t find a job, and we have international students who have their families here with like husband, wife and kids,” Yen said.
The care packages are by appointment only and you can visit lusu.ca/covid19 to book an appointment.
Yen says they are starting to run low on some items and if anyone would like to donate to LUSU’s food bank they can reach out to her at yen@lusu.ca.
