A local man has been given the Medal of Bravery for rescuing a neighbour from an apartment fire in 2017.
Daniel Desrochers explains around 4:30 that morning, he was woken up by the smoke alarm.
He quickly realized a fire had broke out in the apartment of a man who he knew wouldn’t be able to walk because of mobility challenges.
“I looked in the hallway and I saw his door, and the smoke coming out of the edges of the steel door,” Desrochers notes, “It was already a bad fire.”
He called for the man and eventually got a reply.
Desrochers crawled into the apartment, and was able to drag his neighbour out.
The Thunder Bay resident says he was both proud and humbled to get the honour from the Governor General on Thursday in Ottawa.
