Library Into Phase 5

Getting closer to “back to normal” in our libraries.

As of today, the Thunder Bay Public Library is offering more services like free no-contact faxing, scanning and photocopying. You can also drop off used batteries for recycling. You can also place holds on books online or over the phone, and take advantage of no-contact pickup and returns at all four library branches. The library began offering those services at the Waverley and Mary J. L. Black branches in July.

Officials explain it’s part of moving into the fifth phase of their re-opening.

“One of the biggest factors besides safety that led to Phase 5 was capacity. We had to ensure enough staff [were available] to be able to offer these services during re-opening hours at our four locations,” says Chief Librarian and CEO John Pateman. “Everything we’re doing is consistent with the advice that [health officials] are giving us. They want to make sure not only are we providing information to our patrons, but that we’re also operating in a safe environment.”

This is part of the library’s seven-phase approach as they continue to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Pateman says they weren’t able to completely roll out Phase Five as planned, and have to hold off on offering some services inside the entry or lobby at all four branches.

“In order to move ahead, we’ll have to make further changes in terms of the layout of the buildings and put in safety measures, including plexiglass,” Pateman adds, when asked about moving into Phase 6.

Pateman notes there’s no timeline for that move.
