Keewaywin Residents Evacuated

The remote northern community of Keewaywin, 500 kilometres northwest of Thunder Bay, is being evacuated due to a nearby raging forest fire.

The blaze is listed at about 54,600 hectares in size and is burning 12-kilometres southwest of the community.

Sioux Lookout has declared a State of Emergency to allow the community to act as a host site.

The municipality registered 87 evacuees Tuesday and was expecting 122 more yesterday.

Local authorities say the focus is on the elderly, young children, pregnant women and people needing specific health supports.
