Jody Wilson-Raybould will not be running as a candidate in the next federal election, whenever it is held.
In a statement Thursday, the MP from British Columbia says it was not an easy or quick decision to make.
“From my seat over the last six years, I have noticed a change in Parliament, a regression,” Wilson-Raybould said in her three-page statement.
“It has become more and more toxic and ineffective while simultaneously marginalizing individuals from certain backgrounds.”
Wilson-Raybould said she wants to continue driving change on critical issues in different venues.
That includes Indigenous reconciliation, climate change, and social and racial justice, among other things.
“I will be sharing more details soon about my future plans and work, and how we can do that work together,” she said.
Wilson-Raybould was removed from the Liberal caucus in 2019 amid the fallout from the SNC-Lavalin scandal.
She was re-elected as an independent later that year.
