A chance for healing and responsibility for Indigenous people in trouble with the law through the Indigenous Peoples’ Court.
It was discussed at a recent Thunder Bay Police Board meeting.
Following the meeting, Thunder Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre spokesperson Roseanna Hudson says it helps people address issues through a number of programs.
Hudson claims that while mainstream court doesn’t give defendants a chance to speak about their sentence, this court does.
“It’s a chance for them to be heard, it’s a chance for them to tell their own side,” Hudson points out. “It’s a chance for them to be able to let someone know what led them to where they are today.”
Hudson adds many people have succeeded since the court started operating in March of 2017. (Staff Photo)
