Huge Day For Canadian Tennis Star

Canada’s Bianca Andreescu can make history this afternoon if she beats American tennis star Serena Williams.

David McCallum is the President of Thunder Bay’s tennis centre, and tells us this will be Canada’s first US Open win, whereas we’ve won other championships.

“Grand slam finalists, but those were at Wimbledon, that was Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic, both lost in the finals. But we have not had a Canadian in the US Open final, in the open era, so this is historic.”

While Canadians aren’t known for tennis, the local president adds what Bianca Andreescu is doing for the sport is similar to what the Toronto Raptors did for basketball in Canada.

He also feels Andreescu is the best qualified person to beat Serena Williams, and points out what he thinks the Canadian needs to watch for today’s match.

“Big thing I think for her is the second serve. Her ability to win a high percentage of 2nd serve points has been an issue through the tournament, and Serena is going to take advantage of that.”

The local tennis official adds Andreescu’s power can match the American star, especially on first serve and ground strokes.
