Health Unit Advises Against Travel To Nearby States

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) is recommending local residents avoid non-essential trips to Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan.

The advice comes regardless of a person’s vaccination status.

In a release from the health unit, it stated these three states currently have the highest rates of COVID-19 in the country, and are significantly higher than those in Thunder Bay. It was also said that public health measures are different in these areas and generally looser, which could produce higher levels of transmission.

Local Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janet DeMille provided this statement in the release:

““While border restrictions are relaxing, we need to recognize that travel can pose a risk, especially travel to areas where case numbers and community transmission are higher,” says Dr. DeMille. “Recent cases in our area acquired the infection in nearby states. It is strongly recommended that individuals who travel continue to follow all public health measures to reduce their risk.”

If residents do plan to travel to these areas, it is recommended they check the travel guidance on the TBDHU website for information on how to stay safe while travelling and for information on what to do once they have returned.

If you develop any COVID-19 symptoms during travel, even mild ones, you are asked to isolate immediately and arrange to get tested at your local assessment center.
