Haley Irwin Announces Retirement

Thunder Bay’s Haley Irwin officially announced her retirement from international competition with Canada’s National Women’s Team.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist tells us she made the decision after taking a year off to reassess her future

“I went through a bit of a check list you know mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually and where I was at and I came to the conclusion I was ready to move on,” confesses Irwin

The 31 year old does not know what she will be doing now that she’s retired but believes hockey will always be a part of her life in some way.

Irwin made her debut with the national team program in 2009, winning back-to-back gold medals at the Olympic Winter Games in 2010 in Vancouver and 2014 in Sochi, Russia, adding a silver medal in 2018 in PyeongChang, South Korea.

She retires among the top 20 all-time scorers with Canada’s National Women’s Team, amassing 80 points 38 goals, 42 assists in 108 games.

Irwin currently resides in Toronto.

  • Originally from southern Ontario, Jason found his way here and fell in love with the community and music scene of Thunder Bay over twenty years ago. In between various stints on radio, television and writing, Jason is a dad, a partner and (some would consider) a zoo keeper (seriously, he has a LOT of pets).
