Habitat For Humanity Forced To Postpone Build

Habitat for Humanity volunteers are not putting on hard hats until 2015.
Construction of their first home in the last decade has been postponed.
The local organization says a shortfall in donations is to blame.
House build-sponsor, Thunder Bay Insurance and Gillons, has rasied over $80,000 in support of the semi-detached house.
But Board president, Andrew Campbell, says it’s not enough.
“The $80,000 covers their half of the house essentially, and Habitat for Humanity, Thunder Bay, needs to raise an equal portion of that for the second side of the house,” says Campbell.
“We were basically on our way to doing that in late winter, and then having such a late start, donations were down this spring, and we just aren’t where we thought we’d be by this time this year, and then you couple that with the thefts at the Restore, and we’re simply too far behind.”
He adds building materials also stolen from the ReStore in recent months, has also set them back.
“We’re short $55,000, and we’ve really struggled over the summer,” he says. “We also had a second vehicle stolen, and that’s really affected our salvage and our pick-up operations.”
Campbell says he hopes to raise enough money at the annual Gingerbread Build at the Valhalla, this fall. (File photo)
