Geraldton, Wawa Area Under Tornado Watch

A tornado watch has been issued for the Geraldton, Longlac, Manitouwadge, Hornpayne, Nakina, White River, Wawa, and Pukaswka Park areas.

Environment Canada says severe thunderstorms are possible later this afternoon which could produce tornadoes.

Meteorologist Glenn Robinson tells us a warm and humid air mass is moving across those areas, while a cold front is approaching from the west.

He notes that while “There could very well be the odd tornado over this very big region, but for any individual person in that region, the likelihood of seeing a tornado is quite low,” adding they will upgrade to a tornado warning if there is an immediate threat.

He says if a tornado develops, they recommend heading indoors to a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet.

Environment Canada predicts the threat of tornadoes will end late tonight.
