Free used bikes available for Thunder Bay youth

Thunder Bay is diverting waste from the landfill while offering some free bikes to kids in the community.

Thunder Bay’s Second Spin initiative, a bike reuse program has started up for the year.

The program was launched in 2024 and it offers kids bikes that have been dropped of at the city’s landfill for free.

Updates on bikes available are posted to the city’s Solid Waste and Recycling Services Facebook page here.

The bikes are inspected for functionality, and then are added to the inventory as long as they are in working or near-working condition.

Pictures of bikes can also be found on the programs page by clicking here.

Last year, 74 bikes found a new home through the program.

To request a bike, you must fill out a form by clicking here.

The city asks that you do not come to the landfill without a pre-scheduled appointment.
