Float Plane Crash In Harbour

A float plane crash brought emergency crews to Thunder Bay’s north harbour this morning.

It happened at around 9:15 this morning near the Richardson grain elevator.

Pilots Ernie Procyshen and Dan McDevitt were flying over the area in their plane, when they saw another plane preparing to take off. It didn’t take off, so they landed beside it, then they took off again. The second time they came around, they noticed it in trouble.

“We flew over the airplane and spotted it in the water upside-down, and the pilot was getting out on the float,” Procyshen explains.

They checked in with the one person on board, who Procyshen says wasn’t hurt. They brought him into their plane and took him back to shore to meet emergency responders.

It’s not clear yet why the plane flipped over, however, McDevitt tells us the pilot told him it was pilot error.

The Coast Guard and Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue were both on the scene.
