Delta Not Spreading Locally: DeMille

The current COVID-19 situation is stirring up some mixed feelings Dr. Janet DeMille.

The Medical Officer of Health for the Thunder Bay District Health Unit says the more contagious Delta variant doesn’t seem to be spreading within our community, with only eight confirmed Delta cases over the course of the pandemic, the most recent being two announced Monday.

“I think what concerns me, though, as we see the numbers increase in other areas, that we will be impacted at some point by that, and see the numbers go up here,” explains DeMille. “So we want to hold that off, of course, as long as possible.”

Dr. DeMille is wary of rising case counts in Ontario and the United States, “A lot of places have re-opened, and people are interacting more with one another, but it is concerning because this is a virus that has significant consequences, and it’s important that we hold it in check.”

When it comes to the vaccination rates, DeMille says while last week had the fewest vaccinations in months, that makes sense at this stage of the vaccine rollout.

“We’re actually just passing 100,000 people in our area having been fully immunized, so that’s been really great. And it’s natural that the number of doses that are being delivered would slow down,” DeMille points out.

DeMille notes she still wants to see more of us get fully immunized.
