There appears to be cautious optimism from the local Alzheimer’s Society to the federal government’s dementia strategy.
The government says, “it provides a focused vision and direction for advancing dementia prevention, care and support in Canada.”
Executive Director Lucy Black notes it is something the society has wanted for ten years.
She says the agency “is committed to seeing the strategy through….and there is no time to waste.”
The Alzheimer official calls the $50 million set aside by the government for the dementia strategy “a great first step, but the reality is it’s not enough to tackle the increasing prevalence of dementia, and it’s social challenges.”
She explains the strategy ” is just a framework, and the real work now begins” to get it implemented “in a timely fashion.”
She notes there are 2,900 people in the Thunder Bay and district who need care and support for dementia, with the demand continuing to grow.
