‘Deluge’ Does not Deter Voter Turnout

The finals numbers are not in yet, but voter turnout in Thunder Bay is around 64 percent similar to the last election.

Thunder Bay Rainy River Returning officer Ian Simpson does not believe the heavy rain we got deterred voters.

In fact, Simpson reports some stations told of poor attendance during the heavy rain, while others reported an increase.

He adds, “I would say it went both ways and probably evened out in terms of maintaining a steady pace even though the rain was coming down in such a deluge.”

Overall, in the face of bad weather and power outages, the returning officer feels the election ran smoothly in his riding.
