Dease Pool To Shut Down

If you swim at Dease Pool, you’ll have to go elsewhere next summer.

Council voted to de-commission the 106-year-old facility that City Spokesperson Gerry Broere emphasizes is in bad shape.

He explains the liner of the pool is breaking down, and there are signs the wall of the pool is starting to deteriorate.

A report to Council says Dease Pool would need $2.8 million to be brought up to current standards.

With Council voting to close the pool, the city’s General Manager of Community Services Kelly Robertson explains they want to focus on improving nearby facilities.

The city will use $52,000 of Dease Pool’s funding for more youth activities at Dease and Minnesota Parks and Art Widnall Pool, which is around a ten-minute walk from Dease Pool.

City staff say they will consult area residents to decide how to expand programs at Minnesota and Dease Parks.

McKellar Ward Councillor Brian Hamilton is satisfied with that approach.

He explains he’s reassured that kids who use Dease Pool will have somewhere else to go.

Hamilton is also pleased the city will be listening to area residents.
