Council votes to help pay staff to help those in need during the cold.
A memo put forward Monday night by Drug Strategy Coordinator Cynthia Olsen asked elected officials to approve a one-time grant to help staff a warming centre with a specifically chosen community partner.
City administration reports it’ll cost an estimated $46,000 to staff the warming centre.
It was also recommended that council allocate up to $20,000 in the event that external funding cannot be secured for supplies, transit passes and other operating costs.
Staff identified that there is sufficient funding for the centre in the approved 2020 Community Youth & Cultural Funding Program budget, which hasn’t been allocated this year.
The move would help fund the approved warming station through March 2021.
