A local cycling enthusiast is thrilled by City Council’s decision to move forward on a new bridge over the McIntyre floodway connecting Vickers and Carrick Streets.
Michael Sobota spoke before council last night and couldn’t contain his excitement after they approved the project.
“I am so relieved that the council in their really good deliberations and discussion came to the conclusion that this is an issue around safety and that this is an issue around a project that’s already 70 percent funded by the province.”
CN Rail told the city last week they would not allow upgrades to their existing bridge over the floodway to make it suitable for pedestrians and cyclists.
Design details and total cost of the project will come back to City Council in the future.
Staff estimated the bridge could cost over a million dollars.
Councillors voted to add it to the 2020 budget, and cancel proposed multi-use trail additions for the Oliver Road and Ford Street area.
