Officials have re-opened the dedicated COVID-19 Care Unit at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre.
The hospital reports as many as 11 positive patients have been admitted, including four in the Intensive Care Unit.
Situation Lead Dr. Stewart Kennedy explains this is the most COVID-19 patients the hospital has treated at one time.
Right now he says the hospital hasn’t had to stop any of its services or cancel elective surgeries, but is asking you to be cautious now that the lockdown has ended.
“With the increased number in the community, that certainly is a concern, so we’re just putting some areas into action so we can be better prepared,” Dr. Kennedy says.
He’s reminding you to keep up with public health measures like wearing a mask, washing your hands, and avoiding gatherings with people outside your household.
“Certainly, there’s always that expectation that there will be more admissions coming into the hospital, also because of the outbreaks within our vulnerable populations that we’re hearing about,” he says.
The Care Unit features 13 beds and protects the safety of staff and professional staff.
It’s used for patients who are confirmed or highly suspected to be infected by the COVID-19 virus.
