Councillor Wraps Up Women’s Issues Project

There’s a Thunder Bay voice on a national project on women’s equality.

Councillor Rebecca Johnson says she’s among 150 women whose input over the past four years will be turned into a report to the Ministry of the Status of Women.

They dealt with issues like violence against women, and finding more ways to get women in leadership positions.

She recently attended the final meeting for the project with the Canadian Women’s Foundation.

One of the next steps is “to present [the report] to government and then have them look at this and see all of the recommendations and the asks that we are asking for [them] to implement,” Johnson explains.

Councillor Johnson has been a longtime member of the local Women in Politics group, noting that’s why she was approached to take part.

The Councillor feels the they will likely have to push the government to act on the report. She notes that even after decades of work toward equality for women, there are still more steps to take.
