Councillor Proposes Free Menstrual Products

You could see free pads and tampons at some city facilities if the rest of City Council agrees with Northwood Ward’s Councillor.

Shelby Ch’ng is proposing the pilot project that will be put forward at tonight’s Council meeting. She notes access to these products can benefit many people, not just those who are living in poverty.

“I believe that feminine hygiene products are as important as toilet paper, warm water, and soap in a bathroom, and it’s time that we offer this as a necessity.”

If the motion passes tonight, city staff will look at the cost of offering menstrual products at all Library branches and recreation facilities. Ch’ng doesn’t expect any opposition from her colleagues, noting “you don’t have to be female” to feel that the products are necessary.
