Council Round-Up: September 21, 2020

City leaders took steps toward some big changes, but nothing has been set in stone yet.

Here’s everything City Councillors approved or shot down Monday night.

Council accepted a report recommending demolishing the Victoriaville Civic Centre. This is not a final decision on what to do with the mall, but sets Council up to re-visit the topic again for a vote on October 19th. Council was curious about what could be done to revitalize the Victoriaville area and attract more people there if the mall is torn down.

City Council is directing Councillor Albert Aiello to work with the Integrity Commissioner. He will get advice and approval on how he interacts with city staff in his role as the Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club.

Council is directing their staff to start looking at reducing the number of Councillors. This work has to be complete before the 2022 municipal election.

Council is applying for funding through the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Municipal Asset Management Program. The application includes proposals to advance their asset management program, and a promise to set aside $10,000 for that work.

Council heard about two enquiries being considered for the Community Improvement Plan funding. Both eligible requests are on Red River Road. One grant is to provide $1,860 toward improving a fire alarm system, and the second is eligible to receive funding for various tenant improvements, the costs of which are still to be determined.

City Council approved two zoning by-law changes. A developer will be allowed to build a vehicle repair shop at 951 Carrick Street, and they updated the zoning to allow a mini-warehouse in the Northwood Park Plaza to expand.

The city is letting a Masters Street property owner transfer some of his land to the neighbouring property to make the lots equally-sized.
